This royal box was built for Napoleon, but by the time the theatre was completed the Empire had fallen and he was in exile.
The interior is very grand, is horse shoe shaped and has 1,900 red velvet seats including these lovely private boxes.
As we sat in the theatre there was a final rehearsal in progress for a new modern ballet called "Rain"which was to premiere that evening - note the costumes designed by Dries Van Noten.
Nothing Belle Epoque about this stage design !
The orchestra pit had four grand pianos ready for the very contemporary and minimalist music by Steve Reichs.
These pretty lamps were in the gift shop - I would have liked to have bought them for Sophia's new bed room ...
